HOW MEXICAN FAMILIES USED TO BE                             100 YEARS AGO

However it is integrated, the family continues to be the basic nucleus of society, insofar as it biologically reproduces the human species, and in its space, identification with the social group is reproduced.

During this century and particularly in the last decades, important changes occurred in the family. it is common for a person to be able to choose their partner.

Society no longer recognizes parents the right to dispose of their children's future in the way they did in the past. Modern ideas of education have convinced many people that children and young people have rights that must be respected.

Compulsory education in schools has reinforced some traditional family values and modified others. In families where the father's authority is less rigid than in the past, he is presented with the opportunity to relate to his children and his wife in another way: through dialogue, agreement and tolerance.

The incorporation of women to work in industry, commerce or in any other area of production has forced changes in the family; the greater participation of children in housework has called into question the traditional roles assigned to men and women, as well as attitudes of submission and domination.
